The United States first instituted Daylight Saving Time in 1918, the same year it officially adopted Standard Time, the subject of my previous post. Its European foes and allies soon followed. During World War I, Germany started DST in 1916 to save energy. With DST, sunrise will be at the more reasonable hour of 5:15 a.m., sunset at 8:29 p.m., and kids can play outside well into the evening.īenjamin Franklin is often credited with first proposing Daylight Saving Time to save candles. The campus features sprawling green sports fields, natural wetlands, winding nature trails, two heated outdoor pools, athletic courts, air-conditioned buildings and more. Nestled within 37 beautiful acres on the Lake County Jewish Community Campus, Sunrise Day Camp Chicago will share the space with Elaine Frank Apachi Day Camp. Unlike most oncology sleep-away camps that are offered for 1-2 weeks each summer, Sunrise Day Camp allows children to attend camp as often as they like. Sunrise accepts campers who are on active treatment for cancer or have been treated within the past 5 years, and the sibling(s) of a child who meets this criteria. And because Sunrise is a day camp, it does all this while allowing the children to continue their medical treatment and enjoy the comfort and safety of their own homes at night. Sunrise Day Camp, a program of JCC Chicago, brings the simple pleasures of childhood back to children struggling with cancer, changing months of loneliness and isolation into summers filled with sunshine, laughter and happiness.
